Austin's MCC research consortium has hired a No. 2 executive and the leader
of a key research project. Erik Mettala, former associate dean of engineering
for research at the University of Texas at Arlington, was named executive
vice president. Mettalla, 45, worked for the Defense Department's Advanced
Research Projects Agency from 1989 to 1993, and was appointed deputy director
of ARPA's software and intelligent systems technology office in 1991. He will
help map MCC's research and development strategy. Marek Rusinkiewicz was
named director of MCC's Infosleuth Project. The project launched in January,
aims to improve the software used in locating and retrieving information
across far-flung computer networks, including the Internet. Rusinkiewicz, 49,
formerly was professor of computer science and director of undergraduate
studies for the University of Houston. He is an expert in database systems,
workflow management, distributed computer systems and knowledge bases.
