BACKGROUND AND SCOPE ==================== This workshop is the successor to the successful First International Workshop on IMS, held in Lausanne 15-17 April 1998. Intelligent Manufacturing Systems 1999 builds on this success, providing a research forum where IT in Manufacturing has the center stage. The workshop aims to create a forum in which the criteria for excellence are tailored to the industrial need to tackle real-life complexity with advanced information technology. The emphasis is on IMS technology and complements IMS events which are focused on the IMS Initiative itself. The workshop is supported by the organizations described below.

IMS Working Group The IMS Working Group aims to develop strong cooperation links and initiate systematic information exchange amongst teams carrying out long-term research on Intelligent Manufacturing. It complements the official IMS program of industrial R&D projects with a long term research backbone covering Europe and, through liaison activities, the industrialized nations across the world. The Working Group monitors the emergence and development of the next-generation manufacturing systems, including the surrounding business and logistic processes, within the IMS Initiative. The IMS Working Group provides a cost- effective source of information to guide actions from European industry, academia and administration in this respect. The Working group is supported by the European Commission. For more details: http://www.mech.kuleuven.ac.be/pma/project/imswg/welcome.html

ICIMS Network of Excellence The main objective of the Network of Excellence in Intelligent Control and Integration of Manufacturing Systems (ICIMS) is to pool together and enhance the human and material resources of leading research and academic institutions as well as related industries aiming at the creation of an infrastructure that will allow the coordination of research and development, provide the leadership for new research directions efficiently disseminate the new knowledge and help the effective training of professionals and students alike. The long-term industrial goal of ICIMS-NOE is to develop and contribute the necessary tools so that an Adaptive Intelligent Factory (ADIF) become a reality in the long run of 10-12 years. TOPICS ====== Authors are invited to submit papers on topics in the area of the IMS Technical Framework (http://www.ims.org). Several program areas are identified below and papers may be directed toward one of these areas: - Manufacturing paradigms - Multi-agent systems in manufacturing - Holonic manufacturing systems - Manufacturing control and shop floor control - Process and production planning - One-of-a-kind production - Product life-cycle modeling and simulation - Concurrent engineering - Re-manufacturing modeling & simulation - Environmentally benign design and manufacturing - Products, processes and organization for competitive and sustainable growth - Virtual and extended enterprises - Human aspects in manufacturing - Training and education of manufacturing

PAPER SUBMISSION - IMPORTANT DATES ================================== 15 February 1999 Receipt of full papers (4 copies; max. 10 pages) 15 May 1999 Notification of acceptance 30 May 1999 Advance Program and Final Announcement 15 June 1999 Submission of camera-ready papers 22-24 Sept. 1999 Workshop

SPECIAL SESSIONS AND TUTORIALS ============================== Four copies of proposals for invited sessions, including extended summaries of all papers, or two copies of a detailed outline for proposed tutorials must be submitted by 15 March 1999. Dissemination activities of IMS projects and other European projects in the domain are particularly welcome.

POSTER SUBMISSION ================= Intelligent Manufacturing Systems 1999 invites all IMS Projects to present themselves at its Poster Session. Equally, other projects, initiatives and networks are invited to present their activities. Deadline for poster proposals (title + authors) is 15 May 1999. Final posters must be submitted by 20 September 1999.

SUBMISSION ADDRESS ================== Attn. Paul Valckenaers -- IMS 1999 K.U.Leuven - PMA Celestijnenlaan 300 B B-3001 Heverlee, Belgium FAX: +32-16-32.29.87 E-mail: Paul.Valckenaers@mech.kuleuven.ac.be

WORKSHOP VENUE ============== The venue will be Leuven, a city of medieval origin, located in the center of Belgium only 30km from Brussels and 20km from Brussels National Airport. Leuven is widely known as a university town. The university, founded in 1425, is the oldest in the country and it has 27,000 students.

The workshop will take place in one of the university colleges in the heart of the town, amidst pedestrian streets with small restaurants, pubs, bars, cafes and shops. The historic and artistic past is present everywhere in this charming city which is the true capital of the duchy of Brabant. The town hall, the beguinage, the numerous churches, monasteries, convents and university colleges are evidence of a glorious past and lend the town a medieval character.

Brussels may be the first city, Leuven is undoubtedly the liveliest. Whether it is one of the numerous beer cellars of the Old Market, in the restaurants around the famous Town Hall, or amid the peace and tranquillity of the beguinage, nowhere has the fresh wealth of youth greater vitality than in the city of the Alma Mater.
