Recent advances in the theory and research in management and administration.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

1. To encourage scholars to share their theory and research on management and administration. 2. To provide effective managerial responses to environmental challenges of the 1990s and beyond. 3. To provide a forum for exchange of information between management scholars and practitioners.

PUBLICATIONS

Summaries of papers, symposia, and workshops presented at the conference will be included in the Proceedings (edited by D. E. White). Selected papers will be included in Current Topics in Management, Vol. 2 (JAI Press) (edited by M. A. Rahim, R. T. Golembiewski, & T. K. Das) or International Journal of Organizational Analysis. If you want your paper(s) to be considered for inclusion in the book or IJOA (see page 4 for details), please send four copies of your paper with a cover letter to the President.

PAPERS, SYMPOSIA, AND WORKSHOPS

You are invited to submit an original paper or a two-page summary of the paper, proposal for a symposium or workshop to the appropriate track chair. Each submission should include: title page (separate) with names, affiliations, and telephone, fax and e-mail numbers of author(s). Papers must be prepared according to the 1994 Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association and should not exceed 35 pages. Symposium and workshop proposals must include a statement of objectives and a two-page summary of each presentation. After your paper, symposium, or workshop is accepted, you will be required to submit two hard copies of a 500 word summary of the same and one in a 3.5" HD floppy disk in an ASCII file.

SUBMISSION AND REVIEW PROCEDURES

Send four copies of your paper or proposal with a cover letter directly to one of the track chairs. Papers must be received by November 30, 1995. All submissions will be reviewed by a double-blind review process. Papers should not have been presented or published elsewhere prior to the conference. Electronic submissions will not be accepted.

BEST PAPER AWARDS

The ICAM will present an award for the best competitive paper for each track.

PROGRAM ORGANIZATION

The meeting will be organized around eight tracks and will feature competitive and invited paper sessions, symposia, and workshops designed to share ideas and research findings. Innovative sessions are encouraged as are research and theory targeted toward practitioners.

TRACK DESCRIPTIONS

1. Strategic Management & Organization Theory: Specific domains for this track include strategic planning, decision making under uncertainty, strategy formulation and implementation, control, resource allocation in organizations; and organization structure and design, culture, and adaptation processes. We invite professionals to submit papers which focus on recent advances in these areas, i.e., developments during the last decade. The papers may focus on the rational or socio-political approaches or both. Prospective scholars are encouraged to submit conceptual and empirical papers. Empirical works may be case studies, experiments, field studies or the like; however, they should adhere to the usual canons of scientific enquiry. 2. Business, Society, Ethics, and Values: This track will focus on theory and applied research as it relates to domestic and international corporate social responsibility, ethical conduct in organizations, cross-cultural and comparative values embedded in areas such as corporate culture, leadership, patterns of decision-making. Special attention will be given to: managerial values, synthesizing alternative belief systems in managing cultural diversity, and ways in which individual values influence and are influenced by corporate values. Innovative research methods, both qualitative and quantitative, are especially welcome.

3. International Management: This track is appropriate for empirical and theoretical statements of problem identification and practical solutions in the arenas of cultural friction points, international strategic alliances, training and development of international managers, issues in expatriation and localization, competitive management in a world of regional trading blocs, comparative international/cultural human resource practices, managerial practices among foreign-owned firms in a host nation, and critiques of established international management concepts. Innovative research methodology for empirical papers is welcome.

4. Organizational Behavior: We welcome papers on all aspects of the study of individuals and groups in organizational settings and of the internal processes of groups and organizations. We especially encourage papers that focus on advances in management theory and practice, such as organizational learning, total quality management, culture, conflict management, self-managed work groups, innovations in dealing with personal responsibility, commitment, networking, power, leadership, performance, organizational development, and quality of the work experience.

5. Human Resource Management: Papers submitted to this track should address the process, programs, policies, and procedures for accomplishing work through people. Issues attendant to these areas include international aspects of diversity in a global workforce, regulation of the employee- employer relationship, cross-cultural motivation and performance management, training the global workers, among others. Areas of specific interest include human resource strategy for global competitive advantage, employee rights and responsibilities, managing the technological-human interface, and human resource management in the non-profit sector.

6. Healthcare Administration: This domain includes management and administration advances in health care settings within all industry populations-administration, medicine, nursing, allied health and non-professional and support staff. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, organizational assessment and structural changes of healthcare institutions in response to external and internal environmental issues, quality management and international issues and pressures; organizational climate and leadership studies in health care; healthcare finance and marketing for service delivery; public policy issues such as access to care, competition, regulation and reimbursement; information systems, use and cost; management and staff development; issues in addressing cultural diversity in health care settings; conflict; and innovation in health care management or planning and implementation of service delivery.

7. Management in the Public Sector: Specific domain for this track includes management, policy making, and planning and decision making in governmental agencies, and in public, not-for-profit and voluntary organizations. Major topics include decision making; strategic planning; public policy analysis; and policy making and implementation processes, at all government levels; intergovernmental relations; economic development, including public-private partnerships; capital improvements; public organization theory and behavior; leadership; public finance; personnel management; differences between public and private organizations, in terms of such factors as behavior, decision making, leadership, policy implementation, labor relations; the interface between public, private and non-profit entities.

8. Information and Technology Management: This track provides a venue for issues involving management information systems, technological effects on the organization, technological effects on individuals, innovative education through technology, and the management of technology within the organization. Papers which deal with these and other information systems issues will be considered for acceptance in the track.
